One of my favorite things about the summer season is the fresh produce... and I don't mean the grocery store sort. I remember going through Niagara on the Lake (Ontario) as a child and stopping to buy fresh cherries and peaches, spitting pits out the window as we drove along.
We had the chance to stop in to the Country Pumpkin the other day. Its a small road side farmer's market that is open all summer in Maugerville across the road from the Saint John River. They offer tons of fresh local produce as well as delicious baked goods. They have terrific spoon bread, which was unfortunately sold out that day. I did pick up a couple pies, one blueberry and one three fruit. They have a small playground area for kids. You can also visit their animals including donkeys, miniature horses, goats, rabbits, and peacocks.
On the same stretch of road, you can also stop at Harvey's Big Potato, another fruit and veggie stand. This one is even in the Guinness Book of World Records, Cole has informed me (for the big potato statue).
I'm sure we drove by a UPick or two and The Bee Store. I'd like to stop in there some time. I think they sell beekeeping supplies, which is something we are interested in for the future. Maybe next year?
Last week, we visited Skinny's ice cream stand in Keswick Ridge. They also have animals, including sheep and a variety of chickens. Miles liked the sheep!
Check out the NB Conservation Council's local food search to find a CSA, farm, farm stand, market, near you.
Of course I notice now that I took no pictures of produce.. just animals.

I'm sure the goodies you picked up all look (and are) delicious. The animal pictures are great :)
ReplyDeleteLove the photos of animals -- that goat is great! We had a neighbor who had peacocks and the noises they would make were amazingly loud! Really interesting birds.
